Spring Steelhead Schools

2026 DATES

COMING SOON

I stopped offering Spring Steelhead guiding in 2022—not because people weren’t interested, but because I was putting too much pressure on myself in a low-yield fishery. The rivers were getting busier after COVID, I was stressed, and I wasn’t enjoying it the way I used to.

As the Spey Schools grew, more people asked to fish steelhead with me. Turning them away never felt good, and it made me realize how much I missed teaching the parts of steelheading I love most. That’s what inspired the return of this program—just in a new format.

After running Spey Camps for several years, my approach to guiding has shifted. Removing the “catching” from the experience helped me see what really matters: teaching the fundamentals and the long game of steelheading. That’s where the Spring Steelhead School comes from.

These are three-day, small-group classes (only three schools per year, two guests each). We’ll fish a little, and you’ll have legitimate chances to hook a steelhead, but catching fish isn’t the focus. This is an educational experience built around patience, process, and understanding the fishery. If that doesn’t sound appealing, this probably isn’t the right fit—and that’s totally okay.

Over three days, we’ll explore several rivers by jet boat or raft, blending demos, discussion, and hands-on learning. We’ll cover reading water, presentation, casting, mending, gear, setups, strategy, and more. I can provide all equipment and flies if you need them. And yes—lunch is something I take seriously, just like at Spey Camp.

Who is this for? Honestly, anyone.

• New anglers will get a solid foundation for their steelhead journey.

• Experienced anglers will refine skills, dig deeper into concepts, and become more intentional.

• Spey Camp graduates—you’re the folks I especially had in mind.

If you show up curious, patient, and ready to trust the process, I’m confident you’ll leave with a stronger understanding of steelheading.
